Celebrating the Sea Border

MArch 2021

‘Celebrating the Sea Border’ is an intervention in Carlingford Lough, that could entice communities from both sides of the Northern Irish border to come together.

Carlingford Lough is a tidal inlet between the Cooley and Mourne Mountains. While the landscape here reads as one, the Northern Ireland Border runs through the Lough, bisecting the communities. There is a violent history of unrest between the North and South here. Recently, there have been many cross-border initiatives to build trust between the locals. This project seeks to contribute to this ongoing discussion, by providing a neutral, shared space where locals can explore new ways of being together. A local artist described the Lough as a ‘Lacuna’ - an unfilled space. This project strives to fill this gap, providing the missing piece to celebrate this liminal space.
